ROME — Valentino Rossi broke his right shin bone in a crash during practice Saturday ahead of the Italian Grand Prix and was scheduled for surgery.

Rossi, who is second in the MotoGP riders' standings, waved as he was moved on to a stretcher before being taken to the track's medical center for an x-ray that confirmed he had a displaced and exposed fracture of his right tibia.

He was flown to Florence's Careggi medical center by helicopter and said "Ciao" when he was taken out of the ambulance.

Rossi has a "very ugly fracture, with the bone exposed," said Dr. Claudio Costa, head of the Mugello medical facility where the rider was first treated.

The nine-time world champion was being prepared for surgery Saturday afternoon to insert a pin and four screws in the leg, Costa said.

The Italian news agency ANSA said Rossi lost control of his Yamaha while changing direction between two curves on his second practice run. He flipped over in the air and flew off the motorcycle, landing hard on the lower part of his right leg.

When he got up, he was gripping his right calf. The Italian press reports that he'll be out 2+ months.

He must have been taking lessons from Lorenzo bummer to hear about the break. That almost assures Lorenzo of the title unless Yamaha puts Spies on Rossi's bike

I don't know. Isn't that just 2 races he'll miss.  All he needs is for other people like stoner to win and Hayden and he's still got a chance.

What a concept have spies ride Valentino's Bike. Rossi won't let that happen or will they?

Yes. I heard the same rumor. We shall see I guess. I think Spies is a better idea though.

Rossi would want colin, yamaha would probably choose spies, rumor mill is it will be yuka takahasi off of the tech three moto 2 bike, he rode gp last year until mid season when replaced by galbor talmasci.  that move elimates any PR problems within the spies/edwards pits.
