New California Law

Ok so has anyone else heard about this new law that was passed last week?

I was in Sacramento this weekend Drag Racing and one of the track officials were telling me that California just passed a law last week stating that riders with 2007 motorcycles and newer can not modify there bikes. Meaning, no after market exhaust, Intake ,velocity stacks ect..

Riders caught with after market parts are being treated just like the imports are. They are subject to a 3500 fine and possible inpound in some cases.

Now I thought ok so how many cops outside of bike cops are gonna know whats stock and whats aftermarket. Well it turns out that California is supposidly funding 20% of the CHP's work force for training on how to identify that and enforce it for 2009.  So I guess what there saying is 20% of the CHP will be cracking down on this particular issue.

I called BS!! Because that basically means all your Harleys are in the same boat as well. Not to mention wouldnt this hurt sales?  I know if I lived in Cali I would be looking for an 06 or older to do what I want.    I just dont see how this can stick. But the track official did tell me that they are trying to get a new bill together petitioning this new law.

So I called Dynojet to ask them as I would assume they would know, and they flat out said this is why they created the two different websites for powercommanders as well as why they stopped selling jets in CA.   They said that they have already paid fines in CA for selling aftermarket parts for street bikes.  Thats why all there parts say "for track use only"

But Im googling the web but cant find this new law.

I worry basically beacause whos to say NV wont adopt the same policy as well if this is in fact true??

I think you are refering to the bill on smog checks for motorcycles. HERE

I will reserve judgement until we can find something concrete on this. And how would it affect vehicles coming from out of state, like us?

QuoteThis bill would require the department to include model-year 2000 and newer motorcycles in the smog check program beginning January 1, 2012
...upon California registration regarding their existing laws on all motor vehicle smog checks & inspections.

So okay, they're adding newer motorcycles to the list.  Another $20/yr/registration? to the pool of money to enforce existing laws on all motor vehicles that violate smog standards.  I don't see it having an affect on aftermarket parts, except maybe that new shiny Mercury or Charcoal laced exhaust pipe.   :P  mmmm, Mercury.  And it doesn't appear to affect out-of-state motorists.

If Nevada did the same, I wouldn't whine about it.  In 50 years, I hope I'm still around and riding my 160hp hydrogen cell turbine m/c.

I got idea...

Boycott California. I do it. I wish you could explain in a public format that the silliness of California is just plain out of control.

I am going to World Superbike this May (Utah), instead of Moto GP (Laguna) in July. I refuse to help that state regulate itself to death. When traveling north, I always fill the gas tank before entering California. The State is bankrupt. They will soon realize this stuff cost money they do not have.

I dont mean to insult normal folks from California, hey; I am counting on them to change it.

Nothing surprises me from California, it's not like they ever had their priorities straight.

Arrest criminals? Lets go after the guy with a power commander, he's evil! Brilliant.

I think the "normal" folks from California are now residents of another state.

I have not met a single person that has moved BACK or INTO California in a long time...and people don't get why I don't go back...My parents were just stopped in there new car yesterday for tinted windows..THEY JUST BOUGHT IT IN NEVADA. And, typical to CHP, they got a ticket. I still want to know what happens when a NV bike goes into CA. They going to write me a ticket???

The tinted window thing is happening in Nevada too. As the number of Californians increase here, the more their laws will follow them as they want this place to be like where they left for some reason.  :-\

But not to worry too much. If we get too many more laws on the books, the NHP heads will explode. They are not used to remembering many laws. LOL

Yep. I had a customer who lives in Reno and I had his truck doing a gear change. He drove his little commuter Datsun P.U. here to pick up his "real" truck and got a ticket on Hwy 50 for having tinted windows. The NHP has a new googa to measure the actual % of tint and see if you are legal or not. The CA laws are slowly migrating to NV along with the residents.

Hey just a heads up to everyone. Our "friends" in the CHP said this to my buddy last week when he got pulled over. He got lit up for a "improper plate light," at 3pm in the afternoon, going 65 on the freeway. the cop sought him out then lit him up. The story from the cop (and this is not the first person to tell me the same thing): "We are targeting all [of you people] on sportbikes. We will find a reason to pull you over, and write you a ticker every single time. we are tired of the complaints from [you people] and your riding. We are going to write so many tickets that you will no longer be able to afford your insurance anymore so you will stop riding. and your exhuast is too loud ('nother ticket)."
"But sir, what about all those harleys with the super loud exhuast?"
"We don't care about them. we are tired of the problems [you people] are causing."

so, BE CAREFUL when you cross the border. you dont even need to do anything wrong these days to get a ticket there. Ride safe all.

O.K.

I live in Cali. and I'm a pig. I've seen nothing in vehicle code legislation or in the update code sections about the exhaust.  As far as I can tell bikes are still exempt from the currant statute.  As far as there being some officers out there that just don't like bikes, nothing I can do about that.  Yes there are some and one of them is a CHP officer who works in the Downieville area and that man can drive and he does not like bikes.

There are some people who make complaints about squids who do wheelies down the middle of a residential street with the kids out playing or those who just ride like an ass.  It's because of those individuals the rest of us have problems. And I would agree those people deserve what is coming to them.  The rest of us are stuck because of them.  Don't know what to do about that.

There are plenty of roads in the back hills of Nevada County, Placer County, Eldorado Co., ect.  Most of the time we play on those roads it's not an issue.

Wentworth Springs, Skaggs Springs, parts of Hwy 89, Hwy 36 are all good examples.

Guess it's not all the cops and it's not all of the riders.  It is just those few that make it a real pain in the ass for the majority of us.  Use  your head and things will be fine.  I've been pulled over 3 times on my way to work by the CHP for not having my plate mounted.  When I explain the issues and reasons I go on my way.

Just my 2 cents

A DRAGON

Remember don"t let that CHP Officer get away with saying that to you. Please fight the ticket and write a formal complaint to the State of California and the CHP.

I know the officer ( Officer Stow in Quincy ) is a Jerk.

If we let them get away with this we have to recourse. Fight back!!!!

Mase where you work? I have heard this story for 4 or five people in el dorado county now, and rumor has it, it's spreading. I too work in law enforcement and understand that 1 seed can ruin a whole apple. "generally" speaking, it seems like they are cracking down to an unreasonable level; however, no way to proove it. I for one am a big fan of discretion and can not stand it when police light up for something as stupid as plate lights during the day. As for complaining? Hopefully, for them, they don't say that stuff to me. Because i WILL fight it, all the way to the top.

mase

I work in Nevada County.  I spoke with one of my CHP buddies last night and he has not heard anything about it.  We just had our legislative update class with the CHP and nothing was mentioned in that class.
