Maybe I'm dumb but I don't get why they've been taking their legs off the sets before going into the turn. I haven't notice it until this year is this something new? And what is the purpose of it? Or is it strategy?

Justin

It was reported that Rossi started the trend "It helps my braking"
When everyone started copying Vale said "Everytime I see someone copy it, I'm going to charge them a fee"

Jimbo, you're not dumb.  It is a new trend.
Alan, you may not be KFG or FFG, but your definitely a "G"
You're the Scottish O.G. (original gangster)

they talked quite a bit about it during the Leguna Seca GP. Latest is that it acts like an outrigger and helps him tip the bike into the turn. I think it's more mental but I noticed Stoner doing it during qualifications, but not so much during the race. I think it also acts like a timing mechanism for him now too. I've seen this before from other riders before Vale. I've seen Pedrosa, Bayliss and some others do it before this year, but it seems like Vale started doing it regularly this year. I used to think it was just easier for some people to re-adjust their foot after down shifting coming into a corner by completely lifting their leg off of the peg, because your foot is under the lever when downshifting with GP shift, but that theory went out the window when Rossi started doing in with his braking foot too. I did think more about it and I thought maybe it's kind of an intimidation thing for him because he always likes to play mind games with his opponents, and another thing I thought of, it might help to prevent someone attempting an inside pass......or there is always the possibility that he isn't lying about making it easier to turn the bike in that way, but I never saw him having a problem there before!  :D

This theory makes a lot of sense to me.  Ski poles perform the exact same function.

Hell, I remember it being done occasionally during the Lawson/Gardner/Mamola days. Although it is happening a lot now and that is probably more a reflection on people copying whatever the fast guys are doing.

I remember a race where Lawson did it a lot and they asked in the interview and he said it was simply something he did to straighten his leg and then move into the correct position for corning as the pegs were very sharp and he was smoother that way. I suspect it may have been cramping and stretching though because I don't remember seeing it too often from him.

That's cuz you're still in the "harpoon'' stage.

like somebody else said, it's been around for years.  but in the modern era vale has been doing it regularly since they got on the 4 strokes.  for a few years it seemed to be just he and bayliss then a couple years back when people got on 800s and corner speed shot up a few others have joined in.  this year in gp it seems 1/2 the pack does it.

i am going to step it up a notch, i may even start putting my kick stand down in left turns.

I think most of you have done it. Me included. Usually when I'm going into a Turn to hot and I don't think I'm gonna make it. I put my leg out because I'm afraid to turn the bike in. The angle is to sharp and I'm getting ready to drive off the track.

I remember the talk when the first guy stuck out his knee in a turn and began to drag it. If you notice in a lot of old tapes most of the riders never put a knee out to turn. Now everyone does. I just don't see this catching on.
Maybe it will. But hey what ever helps you turn the bike better good for you.
