Riding without proper gear

I started my ride on Sunday from Reno. Rode up to Incline and picked up my wifes friend for her first street bike ride. Went through Truckee with Downeville as our turn around polint. On most days I always wear my protective jacket, pants, gloves, ect. This day I decided to skip the protective pants and wore jeans. My passenger wore jeans, a sweater, and leather gloves. As we were rounding a right hand sweeper 12miles outside Downeville at about 50mph a deer jumped out into the road right in front of us. It was so close I could see each individual hair of its eyelashes. I stabbed the front brakes and down we went into a lowside slide. I am not positive but I think I saw the bike tire briefly knock the rear legs out from under the dear but I cannot be sure as we were now rolling and sliding unconrolably down the asphault. We received some help from a family on theirway home. They took my passenger back to her house and I road the bike the 80 miles back to Reno to the emergency room to fiix my wounds. 8 or 9 stitches and some of the worst pain I have ever been in from the scrubbing of the rash later I was released. If I had been wearing all my protective gear I would still be sore but not anything like the pai8n I am in now. Please wear all of your gear when riding.  If anyone can attach some pics for me let me know. I can't figure it out.

Glad you were able to come back and tell us your story.  Its too bad something like that has too happen, but it sure wakes me up from being complacent on some of those short rides.  I also hope some of the newer riders see this and see how important the right type of gear is.
Wishing you, your passenger, and bike a speedy recovery! :D

riding into work today ATGATT I was amazed to see so many people in shorts and t-shirts riding their bikes. I cringe every time I see someone like that.

I hear you on the pain too. I was 'burned' through my leathers last year at the track and when they cleaned it out I was VERY happy for the IV pain meds they gave me. Made it a bit more tolerable. Compared to my broken ribs, the healing of the burn was HARD since it was on my shoulder. Moving my arm was very painful for weeks following.

I was in the same boat early Sunday morning before the Fort Bragg trip debating whether to take the leathers or not.  I chose to and sweated my arse off.  The Central Valley was an oven coming home just prior to sun-down, but I'll gladly sweat and stink up my leathers than pay with additional injuries and medical expenses.

I hope your passenger made it out okay and isn't too terrified to ride again.  Glad to hear too that your reactionary skills delivered the exact formula for avoiding an even bigger accident.
It's about taking in the most corners to your destination, not about the shortest, quickest route.

Sorry to hear about your get off. Thanks for sharing your experience and spreading the message. I'm glad your here to tell the story. When I was still riding the street, at times I had to convince myself as well to wear my leathers. I would always say to myself, "self, if I do go down and my leathers are in the closet I will be one very p.o.ed individual ". So I always ended up wearing them. Here's to a speedy recovery for ya man. Cheers.

My passenger had a small wound on her right knee and 2 sprained fingers. She got a ride home from the family that stopped to help us.

Very nasty. :o :o :o

Happy to hear you two are alive. Your accident is one of the first ones I've heard where you ran into the dear. Usually the dear runs into you. Glad your safe ;D ;D ;D

Yo-Diggity-----Ditto------If I'm just riding to an event in town. You will catch me in my Leather Jacket and Gloves. If I go out of town Always in my full Leathers.     People always use the excuse that it's to hot to wear Leathers. I find it hotter if you don't.  You get the engine heat on your legs and the Sun beating down on your bare Skin.  Like a person ridding in a convertible car. Very cool Looking. But Hot as Hell. Sun beating down on you all day.

Amen to that experience. Thank God your OK. We 3 riders rode Sun. 27th Ebbets, & Sonora Pass. Myself, I sport Rocket mesh with guards jacket, Cordura pants ashpalt resistand semi breathable. Pants get warm but no warmer than ambient temp. 1 rider (young stunter type) crashed at Ebbets, and Sonora, yes twice in one day. Both lowside lefts. Second time was off the edge at top of SonoraPass. Bike R1 and rider plunged approx. 75' down side of mountain. Rider banged up but OK, R1 not so well. Reduced to R-0. Both time he was behind me, old man on Beemer. SUCKED IN? "OOPS" He had gear on. walked away few bruises. His Guardian Angel's workin O.T.! Anyone need 98 R1 parts?
