For you geeks out there that are on internet all the time, like me :)
Who has best connections and speeds without slowing down here in Reno?
I have att dsl now and am sick and tired of it, every night between 8 and 10pm it slows down like rush hour at spaghetti and sometime can't even log on.
Is there better provider out there?

Z, I have used charter for a long time now... never had anything else... I do feel they get the job done, I have way too many computers going at all times here at my house, 2 kids gaming, 1 kid facebooking, wife doing business stuff, and me surfing bike stuff and forums and I think my computer works pretty fast, thanks to Scott from DeBug computer! my  :2cents

Dale, I think I will give them throttle tube ...
Youngster, you get slow down in some hours? Which service you have?

Scott

if you get charter and a DOCSIS 3.0 modem you may be eligible for speeds up to 60Mb/s
this is what i use, i pay 49.99 for their Max service at 25Mb/s
in reality with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem this is what i get.

I be happy with 5 mb/s, never mind 50 :)
I get less than 1 in between those hours I mentioned.
Still does not answer my question, are there rush hours like I have with charter?

FYI  Zoran I switched to Clear wire from DSL.  A little faster.   But don't want to pay the price of $65.00 a month for Charter.  I'd like to check out Scott's provider.  Their $6.00 cheaper than Clearwire.

Zoran, to answer your question, DSL shares the bandwidth with everyone on your local 'equipment' (something like 230 people per). If someone is watching movies on streaming netflix then it will get slow. The maximum speed is also limited by physics as it is using your telephone line to get to the local 'equipment' ( called a POP). Cable works the same way, but it has a higher speed limit and the cable company can 'throttle it back' by sending commands to your local modem. This ensures 'equality' so that you get the same speed that your neighbor who is watching porn gets. It IS usually faster, but can still suffer problems. It all really depends on who you are sharing with.

As an example how all of them are somewhat equal, here in Carson Valley we have a SINGLE fiber line that goes from here to Reno. Charter, ATT/Verizon all share this cable with all businesses and homes. It is only capable of handling so much. So when it's busy, both services can slow down.

If you are somewhat happy with your DSL as far as price and speed "most of the time", call them and have them test your line. My DSL slowed down once and it was because of a bad wire in my house. Another time it was their equipment down the street was broken. Both times they fixed it and everything was fine again.

Good luck!

I like Charter, never had problems. At time it does slow down a bit but as Dale say that just can't be helped.

There is nothing wrong at my house. they been here twice last week, changed modem, jerked around but did not fix problem. Next night same stuff all over, can't log or way to slow between 8-10pm. Than I call gain, open ticket, and guy calls in morning and leaves message that line checks fine and nothing wrong. No number to call him back or anything. They don't work between 8-10 to come and see. Screw them, I am gona try something else, tired of talking with wall. I don't care what it cost, I need it to work. Right now it is not and I am still paying them for service they are not providing.
