Need updates from anyone who knows if La Porte Road has been open since the 07/04/11 weekend.

Post here if you're going.  North route and remember 8:00AM start.  Our 2011 group rides have been very intimate, with generally about a half dozen on each.  No need to worry about a massive parade of bikes with people riding erratically.  It has been 'safety first, fun second' for all of our rides, even though at the end of the day it always feels the other way around; probably because of a successfully safe ride.

La Porte and back is the better part of a day, has a deli/ice cream shop we can eat lunch at (or Quincy/Downieville/Oroville), has a museum (which has some really cool mining artifacts), and the road has some unmarked slow technical corners and occasional rocks/gravel in corners, much like Mosquito Ridge Road: camping & boat trailers!  :rant

Beginners should ride well within their limits in the tight twisties, which is kind of a stupid blanket statement, since we all have to do that for every ride.  In other words, we'll be doing some slow stuff where we'll be below the speed limit, but feel like the pace is challenging and fun.

And that's what it's all about, riding at your own pace, presenting yourself with enough technical riding that you feel like you're having fun, while the whole time taking in some of the best Sierra Mountains scenery available.   The day always flies by when you're having fun.

If you haven't been on this route, ask to follow someone who has.  We'll cover safe riding techniques before we get to La Porte road and point out what to expect.
Gear up, bring along water and a camera...and remember, kickstands up at 8:00AM. :redbike2 :greybike :ylwbike2 :blackbike :grnbike :bluebike

Yep for me, will be my first time on La Porte!!! I'm pretty sure GM knows every place ice cream is available on any given ride.

I mentioned the ride with the SSA tomorrow to a friend; he warned me that some of those guys pass on double yellows and go over the speed limit  :o I told him I was sure he was misinformed  :angel

Probably more SSA of old than SSA of recent, unless I'm missing something.   Probably also why our ride groups are smaller now than before.  I guess we're not as much fun when we're not receiving citations (LEO awards as their called by other ride groups) or seeing unnecessary crashes.

Then again, I'm old, so maybe that's it.  :-\
