:rainday Sorry folks, the water is too swift and dangerous to play in this weekend.  On the other hand, if you have a kayak, you're probably going to love the conditions.

So instead of swimming in the rapids, how about we ride over there anyway and either have lunch in Nevada City or come back to Downieville?  I'm trying out a new riding method where you ride a tire groove and try not to use your brakes before hairpins.  It's been documented elsewhere and it's called "the pace."  The idea is to not exceed the speed limit, stay in one tire groove and attempt to ride without using either brake.  I wasn't completely successful tonight, but I can see how riding like this can make slower speeds fun.

So to confirm, Jerome's Swim ride is canceled, but the ride to Jerome's swimming destination is still on.

Distance to the river is ~125 miles.  Downieville is ~90 miles and Sierraville is ~55 miles.

BTW, this is the last scheduled group ride for July.  Next weekend is the MotoGP (07/24) and the following weekend is the SSA track day at Thunderhill.  In other words, we're almost to the mid-point in the 2011 riding season.  Don't miss out on any of these rides if you can help it.  Before you know it, Summer and the riding season will be only a fond memory.

The Pace does not necessarily preclude using your brakes; the point is that if you have to brake before every turn it's because you are hammering down the straights (likely obliterating the speed limit).

From the original essay:

QuoteIf the brakes are required, the front lever gets squeezed smoothly, quickly and with a good deal of force to set entrance speed with minimum time. Running in on the brakes is tantamount to running off the road, a confession that you're pushing too hard and not getting your entrance speed set early enough because you stayed on the gas too long. Running The Pace decreases your reliance on the throttle and brakes, the two easiest controls to abuse, and hones your ability to judge cornering speed, which is the most thrilling aspect of performance street riding.

Anyway, I had a great time on Jerome's Swim Ride last year (it was my first SSA ride), but I can't make it this year.

Green Machine.  So happy your trying to ride with more precision.  I enjoy it so much.  It keeps me in control.  And I say you earlier today.  I was on my way back.  Call me for the video.

Dragon,

I think I beat you to the picture post.  I was on my way out to the river when you spotted me.  It was a very quite afternoon on the road out and back.

Darn.  I could have saved myself the trip.  But then again, what would I have done to kill the afternoon?   :P

Dub,

What do you do to keep riding on the street exciting, now that you know you can go fast?

I believe KKM (Kevin) and BC will be on the memorial ride as well.  Be safe everyone!

I thought we were riding "the pace" last weekend? When going through corners is downshifting verboten too, or just touching the brakes?

The excitement hasn't worn off yet.  I'm still pretty new at this.
I have found that so for this summer I have been riding slower on the street than ever before.  The race track has spoiled me.  All I see as I'm carving the canyons is drop off, rock wall, boulder, guard rail, ditch instead of gravel run off.

I believe that would be GreenMachine and ADragon.
They recovered his bike preventing the CHP from impounding it.
They brought it back to town and they have his address.  Looks like a timing issue.

Glad to here your up and feeling better Mark.  :)

An unfortunate run-in for FireBolt.  His bike mostly has rash and plastic damage.  I spoke to him by phone about an hour ago. He has some healing to do, but most importantly he's going to be okay.  He was also bummed that he missed lunch with us at the Mountain Creek Restaurant in Sierra City, something we had planned on just a minute before leaving Downieville.  As often as we motorcyclists ride by that place, it always amazes me when people have never heard of the restaurant with the creek running though it.  Today, everyone loved it.

Oldbolt and I made the most of today's run out to the river on Hwy 49, turning back at Couterville.  We were able to hang with some of the other SSA gang in Downieville while we waited for A Dragon to arrive.  Thanks to him, Firebolt's bike is safe and sound back in Reno.  Then his family treated me with dinner for resetting his wireless and getting Andrew's Nintendo DS online.

Did I tell the story about the three different deer I chased on the motorcycle on Thursday?
