I think I have a drivetrain problem and not sure I'll have it fixed by this weekend's scheduled rides.  I rescheduled MRR for Sunday, since the excursion rides, like the Feather Falls hike/ride should have been listed for Saturday.

Post up if you're considering riding up MRR and I'll see if I can get my bike's woes repaired in time.

Memorial ride this Sunday for me.

Do you mean at RFR?

On the drivetrain problem, I checked on it last night.  Yup.  Sprockets are fried from chain stretch.  Looking online has been a struggle.  They sell tons of conversion kits, but I just want to replace what I have (530 110L 16T/41T) without converting anything.  I may just have Rich at Motosource take care of it.  The bike can still be ridden, but the chain occasionally makes an awful clunking noise.

No, I'm talking about the annual John Petty Memorial Ride with NSC.

Here ya go:
Chain
Countershaft
Rear

The chain doesn't need to be 110 links, you just size it at the time of installation.

Very worthy cause.  Dnk.  Have a safe ride and thanks for the research.  I'll probably order the two sprockets tonight, but still want the solid OEM style chain.  The one that's on there now has a pressed on link.  The solid OEM lasted twice that of the link style, without the shwoosh-shwoosh-shwoosh sound.  It'll be a lot more work, but the longevity will be worth it to me.

By "solid OEM style chain", do you mean an "endless chain" that comes connected with the appropriate number on links from the factory?  That requires you remove the swing arm to install it, right?

It seems to me that the longevity of the OE chain had more to do with it's make/model/construction than the fact that it didn't have a hand riveted master link.

Yes, it'll be a lot more work as you describe.  The second shwoosh shwoosh shwoosh chain was the same make but a higher quality tensile strength X-ring, instead of the OEM style's older endless chain O-ring type.  If I can get 37K miles from it, like from the first, it will all be worth it to me.

I spent some time manually rotating the countershaft to see how oddly the chain was working.  When the chain link was at (7 O'clock) on the countershaft, the whole chain was at its tightest.  As I rotated the countershaft, chain slack would increase to about 4 inches between its high and low slack position, then back to basically very tight once the link hooked up with the countershaft sprocket again, tightening completely at the 7 O'clock position.  Unfortunately I have nothing to compare this to, but I distinctly remember the chain always having the shwooshiness from brand new and I could feel a "click" through the left foot peg, which was probably the link making its countershaft rounds.

Hey GM,

Will your bike be ready for the Sunday ride?

Unfortunately, no.  I'm grateful it was able to get me this far, although the gearing damage doesn't look as bad as it felt at times.

It'll be a race as it is to get the drivetrain back together by next weekend.   That is my goal.
